Confidence is key and a lack of confidence communicates weakness and a good leader cannot lead if they are perceived to be weak. Displaying confidence goes beyond verbal communication. In fact, more than half of human communication is nonverbal and a good leader should communicate confidence through their body language.
A good leader by a display of their confidence sets the right tone for the team or organization he or she is leading and in so doing inspires hard work, communication, and good team morale. Some non-verbal cues that display confidence are standing tall, making eye contact and listening attentively.
Speaking of being attentive, a true leader does not lose focus on his or her goals and does not present himself or herself to be lacking focus and direction. A true leader is organized and good at planning and strategizing on behalf of the team. With the ability to focus on a clear goal or goal a true leader is able to lead the team or organization to success.
In order for a leader to be effective he must garner the trust of his team members and in order to do that, a leader must be honest and transparent. Whether a leader knows it or not, the team members look to the leader and get a sense of their honesty, values, and code of ethics and this affects how the leader is perceived. A good leader should keep his word, follow through with projects and any promises made.
Sometimes being a good leader means you have to maintain a positive outlook even when it is hard to do. You have to motivate your team and show that you believe in them and you believe in your mission and vision. A good leader inspires and motivates and in order to do this the leader must maintain a positive outlook and even when he or she has doubts, he or she must not let it show. Even a fool can tear down, but it takes a man of mind and character to build up.
A major role of a leader in decision making and a leader cannot do this if they are indecisive. Decisiveness is an important trait to have especially when it comes time to make hard decisions or when you have to choose between two not so great options. Making hard and tough calls may not please all your team members but it will earn you their respect.
This also applies to make external decisions about the direction of the team, projects to take on, etc. A willingness to accept responsibility is the foremost trait of leadership. Every individual from the highest commander to the lowest private must always remember that inaction and neglect
A good leader should be fair and should treat all team members equally. If a leader is seen to favor some team members above others, it breaks trust and breaks confidence in the solidarity of the team. Impartiality and in fairness has a demoralizing effect on team members. It takes a strong leader to make decisions, pass judgment and stir the team in an impartial and just way. If a leader is lenient, it should be leniency across the board to all team members, same goes if he or she is hard or strict.
A good leader must have initiative and vision for the team or organization he or she is leading. Part of having initiative is taking responsibility in choosing the direction a team should take and stirring them in that direction. A lack of foresight by a leader leads to the team losing focus and even failing at achieving its goals. Many teams have failed because the leader could not plan ahead and take initiative in leading the team forward.
Same goes for organizations with perhaps more than one leader. The leaders of an organization- a healthcare organization, for example, need to come together and plan the course the organization should take. This includes both short-term and long-term strategic planning. If the team leader does not take initiative to introduce new projects, better way of doing things and new and exciting activities to spruce things up, the team or organization will continue to coast along on the old way of things and not grow.
A good leader should have imagination and creativity
A good leader needs to have reliability and dependability as one of his or her major qualities. It bodes well with the previous point about honesty mentioned above. A team should be confident in their leader and should feel like they can rely on the leader and depend on them to come through with executing plans, keeping promises and staying true to the vision.
Just is a leader needs to be able to depend on his team members and subordinates, so do the team members need to depend on the leader. When a leader is dependable he or she garners the loyalty, admiration, and respect of the team. This means a more effective team.
